The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is New Mexico’s only academic medical center and only Level I trauma center for both adults and children. With approximately 618 licensed beds, it serves as the state’s primary location for complex and critical care, burn treatment, stroke emergencies, and pediatric specialties.
As the main teaching hospital for the UNM School of Medicine, UNMH is a hub for cutting-edge medical research, technology, and clinical trials. It’s renowned for pioneering telehealth programs like Project ECHO, which extends specialty care to rural areas across New Mexico and beyond.
Trauma & Emergency: The only Level I trauma center in New Mexico, capable of handling the most critical cases.
Pediatric Care: Home to the state’s only children’s hospital and pediatric subspecialty services.
Stroke & Burn Units: Houses the primary stroke center and the only burn treatment center in the state.
Cranial Neurosurgery & ICU: Awarded the 2024 Cranial Neurosurgery Excellence Award and 5-star recognition for respiratory failure and GI bleed treatments by Healthgrades.
UNMH led the way in out-of-hospital extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for cardiac arrest patients and was an early adopter of advanced telemedicine systems to improve care in underserved areas.
As a safety-net hospital, UNMH provides essential services to uninsured, underinsured, low-income, and tribal populations across the state. It recorded over 1 million patient visits annually and serves as a primary resource for high-level care.
The Barbara & Bill Richardson Pavilion, opened in 2007, expanded emergency, ICU, pediatric OR, birthing suites, and child-focused facilities. The hospital campus includes the Carrie Tingley Children’s Hospital, UNM Cancer Center, and multiple specialty and outpatient facilities.
